A blue balcony with Moroccan inspired floor tiles and verdant trees across the road, serving as the backdrop.

The balcony is sizeable enough to fit a round table comfortably, as well as two bicycles on one side of the wall

Living room overlooks the blue balcony, and of course greenery

Right next to the living room is the dining space, which occupies the centre of the apartment

The flooring over the dining area are original mosaic tiles (circa 1960s), that the owner decided to preserve when he renovated the apartment. The solid timber bookshelves were made from local timber and custom fitted into the space

As you enter the apartment, the kitchen lies to the left

There is an air well next behind the kitchen windows, providing light and ventilation to this side of the apartment

This spacious common bedroom is at the front of the apartment, next to the living room and immediately to the right as you walk in from the main door

The bedroom at the back comes with an ensuite bathroom. Right outside the floor to ceiling window is a planter, allowing the owner to bring in some greenery into the space

The ensuite bathroom is tiled in pastel blue tiles and hexagonal marble mosaic, an pairing that provides an interesting contrast of textures

The other side of the ensuite bathroom

We end the photo tour with the common bathroom at the end of the apartment, next to the kitchen. The bathroom is painted in a similar blue as the balcony at the front, effectively connecting the two opposite ends of the apartment with a unified design scheme

Floor Plan

Some say Blue is the warmest colour. It is indeed in the context of this beautiful and eclectic walk-up apartment in historic Jalan Besar. It has been lovingly renovated, with parts of the original mosaic floor tiles preserved.

The apartment comes with two separate bathrooms, one of which is ensuite. The configuration is a rarity in walk-up apartments that are modelled after shophouses built in the early 1900s. This one however also has an air well right next to the kitchen, a feature often seen in SIT flats in Tiong Bahru, which brings in additional ventilation and light. The layout of the apartment is squarish, with no wasted space, I must say. It also comes with a small storage next to the common bathroom at the back.

Just a stone’s throw away is Farrer Park MRT, and with it the conveniences of a big mall, City Square Mall. Yet when you shut the balcony doors, you feel like a world away from the city thanks to the verdant greenery across the road.
